The European Reform University Alliance and the European University Viadrina (ERUA)

ERUA at the Viadrina

Since November 2023, the European University Viadrina has been a member of the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA), a network of eight universities stretching from the Canary Islands via France, Italy and Poland to Lithuania, Bulgaria and Greece. The Viadrina is thus being funded as a "European University" and will receive 2.25 million euros out of a total of 12.8 million euros for a period of four years, with which the European Commission is funding the entire ERUA network. The aim of the European Reform University Alliance is to innovatively shape the future of universities in Europe and to rethink teaching and learning as well as research and social commitment from a critical, European and inclusive perspective.

European universities

With the European Universities Programme, the European Commission is promoting the networking of universities across Europe. As cross-border university networks, they are intended to strengthen the higher education area by pooling the strengths and diversity of research and teaching at universities in Europe.

For us as the European University Viadrina, which sees itself as a reform university, full membership is both an honour and an incentive to contribute our European expertise as an innovative and inclusive university and to further strengthen our international research cooperation and mobility opportunities for all members of our university.

Prof Dr Eduard Mühle, President of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder)

The Confederation of German Employers' Associations honours ERUA-related seminar at the Viadrina

On Tuesday, 25 November, the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) received the German Employer Award for Education 2025 for its outstanding commitment to promoting democracy. The award was presented for a seminar on the topic of "Democracy in crisis?" by Lilo Meier, Elisa Lehrer and Dr Anna Rößner. The interdisciplinary and interactive course organised by the economists invited students to take a critical look at the challenges facing democracies at the interface between business, politics and society. The project included excursions, simulation games and a final trip to Vilnius in Lithuania, which was organised as an ERUA travelling seminar at the partner university Mykolo Romerio (MRU). The prize for the Viadrina is endowed with 2,500 euros.

Call for Innovative Teaching Initiatives, Round 3

Once again we are looking for exciting teaching formats such as travelling seminars, intensive courses, semester courses or seasonal schools. The call is aimed at all lecturers who would like to develop and offer innovative formats together with lecturers from other ERUA partner institutions. Existing or planned courses and initiatives can also be 'opened' for this purpose. The initiatives can be funded with travel grants for students and lecturers. We are also happy to help with networking with suitable partners from the ERUA Alliance. Please submit your proposals to the ERUA Viadrina team by 11 December 2025. Receive feedback within a few days and the opportunity to revise the format by 19 December. The final decision will be made by the ERUA Committee by the end of January.
