Senate

Presentation Senate

The Senate is a central university committee and is made up of professors, students, academic and non-academic staff. The senate usually meets monthly during the lecture period, otherwise as required. Among other things, it passes resolutions on teaching and research, the establishment and cancellation of degree programmes and elects the members of the university's governing committee. It also comments on study and examination regulations, the university's statutes and regulations and the draft budget. With the exception of personnel matters, the meetings are open to the university public.

The Ethics Committee advises the university on issues relating to responsible research with integrity. Its task is to ensure compliance with ethical standards and the preservation of scientific integrity in research projects. In particular, it ensures that the dignity, integrity and rights of the people involved in a research project are protected. The Ethics Committee is made up of both members of the university and external experts in order to ensure a balanced and professionally sound judgement. Further information can be found on the website of the Ethics Committee.

The Career Development Advisory Board ensures standardised, transparent and high-quality career development procedures across the university. It supports the selection and appointment committees in the recruitment and evaluation of (senior) researchers, (senior) lecturers, junior professors and tenure-track professors. It makes recommendations on target agreements and provides impetus for the continuous development of evaluation procedures. Overall, the Career Development Advisory Board helps to promote high quality standards as well as fair and transparent career paths in academia at the university.

The permanent members are elected by the Senate. In addition, the Commissioner for Equality, in the case of professorial procedures the Appointments Officer and, in the case of procedures for (senior) researchers and (senior) lecturers, a person appointed by the university management for quality assurance are also members in an advisory capacity. This committee is also supplemented by a representative of the Academic Staff Council, who contributes the perspective of the employees to the consultations.

In procedures for probationary or follow-up evaluations, the Career Development Advisory Board is supplemented by specialised members. This expansion includes a professorial member of the respective Faculty or organisational unit, an external professorial member recognised in the subject area of the person being evaluated and a representative of the academic staff of the unit in question. This expanded composition ensures a professionally sound, balanced and fair assessment as part of the evaluation process.

The permanent members since winter semester 2025 are

Prof. Dr Jan-Hendrik Passoth, Vice-President for Research and Career Development

Prof. Dr Chrstina Elschner, professorial member
