Interview with Kuwi alumna Sahra Damus

Sahra Damus studied cultural studies from 2002 to 2008, specialising in linguistics and social sciences. Her professional career took her from research and gender equality work at the Viadrina to a five-year stint as a member of the Brandenburg State Parliament, before she returned to the university. In this interview, she talks about her path into politics, how an initiative at the Viadrina paved the way for her to work at the UN in Vienna, and why it is interesting to step out of the ‘Viadrina bubble’ from time to time.

Interview with ENS alumnus Mohammad Arafat Intisher

Mohammad Arafat Intisher completed his Master’s degree in ‘Digital Entrepreneurship’ at the European New School of Digital Studies in 2023. Alongside his studies, he was active as an anti-racism representative. He currently works as an Associate Engineer in the Core Data & Control Technology division at Deutsche Bank. He speaks fluent Bengali, English and German and has a global academic and professional background characterised by both technical development and social engagement.

Alumnus Felix Töppel receives the Historical Commission’s Young Researchers’ Prize

On 19 June 2026, Felix Töppel was awarded the “HiKo_21 – Young Researchers’ Prize 2026” by the Historical Commission of Berlin. He impressed the jury with his doctoral thesis on the Prussian Maritime Trade and its integration into the global economy. As well as the prize, worth 2,000 euros, Töppel was particularly delighted by the laudatory speech given by Viadrina graduate PD Dr Agnieszka Pufelska.

Alumni visit the Kulturzug

At the end of September, an extraordinary German-Polish event took place on the Frankfurt (Oder)–Poznań railway line. Under the motto ‘Rechtswissenschaft (Law) unites Europe’, representatives from Viadrina and AMU in Poznań introduced passengers on the ‘Culture Train’ to German-Polish Legal Studies and the career opportunities it offers. Among those present were alumna and lawyer Anna Dolejsz-Świderska and alumnus Dr Marcin Krzymuski, education and project manager at the Frankfurt-Słubice Cooperation Centre.

Viadrina celebrates its alumni on Graduation Day

27 June 2026 marked Graduation Day at Viadrina: more than 200 graduates from all three Faculties and the European New School of Digital Studies (ENS) received their degrees, including Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates as well as PhD candidates. The President and the Deans offered their congratulations during the ceremonial degree conferrals, whilst also reminding the graduates of their social responsibilities. In their speeches, the graduates highlighted what makes studying at Viadrina so special.

Farewell ceremony for IHL alumni

On 6 May 2026, a formal ceremony was held to mark the graduation of students from the Master’s programme in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the European University Viadrina. Ten graduates from Austria, Germany, India, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan, Ireland, Pakistan and Denmark successfully completed their studies. Family members and friends accompanied the graduates on this special day.
