Alumnus Philip Murawski and his format "We need to talk"

Philip Murawski, alumnus and operator of the cultural café KUKURYKU, was annoyed. Time and again, he hears people complaining about each other, senses elbows being pulled out and observes viewpoints hardening. "I thought to myself: Man, you have such cool people in your ranks, why don't you have a chat with each other?" Driven by this thought, he and Laura Gerards Iglesias from the Institute for Conflict Management (IKM) developed the "We need to talk" format, in which actors from politics and the city come together to discuss the most controversial topics possible. After three events, their assessment is mixed.

International award for master's thesis

Natalie Freiin von Beust was awarded the Joseph T. McLaughlin Original Student Article Award on 12 February 2026 for her final thesis on the opportunities and risks of third-party financing in international arbitration proceedings. The International Centre for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) honoured the Viadrina graduate at its annual conference in San Diego. Natalie von Beust studied Mediation and Conflict Management at Viadrina from 2023 to 2025. She is now a litigation lawyer and dispute resolution expert in Nuremberg.

Research award for master's thesis on "Dance as a political practice"

Annika Kühn received the 2025 Research Award from the Society for Dance Research for her final thesis. She completed her Master's degree in Soziokulturelle Studien in 2025 with the thesis supervised by Prof. Dr Stephan Lanz. The jury praised the fact that her findings make a valuable contribution to questions relating to the body, resistance, empowerment and community from post-migrant and feminist perspectives.

Kuwi graduate Luisa Rath-John manages the Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles

She studied and did an internship in South Africa, taught German in India and coordinated the programme work of the Goethe-Institut in Central Eastern Europe in the Czech Republic - today Luisa Rath-John manages the Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles. She explains why studying Cultural Studies has opened up the world to her and what challenges she is mastering in Los Angeles far away from the film sets. She also gives current students advise for an international career.

After a break of several years, the Brussels alumni met on 3 March 2026. 14 graduates from four different countries accepted the invitation from Prof Dr Stephan Simon and alumnus Stephan Redlich to the Kafenio in the EU quarter.

International, entrepreneurial spirit and many new ideas - alumni met in Berlin

Following the motto "Viadrina connects", Alexander Klebe, graduate and freelance photographer, invited Viadrina alumni - especially individual entrepreneurs and creators - to a networking event in his photo studio. On 13 November 2025, his Ocean Studio Berlin became a space for exchange, inspiration and new contacts.

Viadrina honours its graduates at Graduation Day 2025

Bachelor's, Master's, Staatsexamen in Law and PhD: On 28 June, the Viadrina celebrated its graduates from all three Faculties and the European New School of Digital Studies. More than 850 international guests, including around 220 graduates, celebrated the presentation of their certificates on campus with live music from the German-Polish band LUNYA.

More than 60 graduates of the Master's programme in European Studies met at the town hall of Berlin-Schöneberg. The guests had accepted the invitation of long-standing programme director Prof. Dr Timm Beichelt and his team to exchange ideas and make new contacts in a relaxed atmosphere.
