MES alumni meeting in Berlin

MES-Alumni meeting at the Schöneberg Town Hall in Berlin

It is a symbolic place: On the initiative of graduate Saravanan Ganesan, more than 60 graduates of the European Studies Master's programme met on 5 June 2025 at Rathaus Schöneberg - the place where John F. Kennedy said 62 years ago: "Ich bin ein Berliner." All those present could say of themselves: "I am a European."

One thing was clearly noticeable among the alumni of very different years at the meeting: the enthusiasm for Europe is genuine and follows the firm conviction that the European Union is the best solution for a united Europe to date. The former Viadrina students had accepted the invitation of long-standing programme director Prof. Dr Timm Beichelt and his team to exchange ideas and make new contacts in a relaxed atmosphere.

Four graduates sought answers to the question: What is Europe for? Moderated by Dr Linn Selle, Head of the European Department at the Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia to the Federal Government, the participants spoke about their multi-layered perspectives on current events in Europe.

Alumni meeting in Warsaw

At the invitation of German Ambassador Viktor Elbling, around 50 graduates, mainly from Warsaw, have met with Viadrina President Prof. Dr Eduard Mühle in the Polish capital on 27 June 2024. After a discussion with the ambassador about the current situation of German-Polish relations, the guests had enjoyed a networking event in the garden of the German Embassy.

"The European University Viadrina is a university that is committed to the German-Polish and European idea like no other. Since its foundation in 1991, it has not only played an important role as the core of the German-Polish university cooperation, but has also made an enormous contribution to European understanding," said Ambassador Viktor Elbling in his welcome address at the beginning of the meeting. He also emphasised the special role of the Polish alumni in German-Polish relations and expressed his joy that the embassy is a meeting place for the Warsaw Viadrina community.

Alumni meeting in Wroclaw

Around 40 graduates had accepted their invitation of Viadrina President Prof. Dr Eduard Mühle to a meeting at the German Consulate General in Wrocław on 18 April 2024. All of them had graduated from the European University Viadrina between 1997 and 2023 and now live in Wrocław, Katowice, Zielona Góra, Wałbrzych, Poznań or Legnica.

At the meeting, they were welcomed by Consul General Martin Kremer and introduced to Eduard Mühle, President of the Viadrina. He dove into the latest projects of the European University. Afterwards, Viadrina alumnus and lawyer Robert Suligowski had an open discussion with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland and Viadrina lecturer, Marek Prawda, that focussed in particular on the transformation of the European Union since Russia's attack on Ukraine.
