With the Viadrina Debate, the European University Viadrina presents itself as a place for debating socially relevant topics of the future - both regionally and nationally. Current issues are discussed at the Viadrina Debate from a pan-European perspective. The series brings together experts, students and the interested public in a forum for critical discourse and promotes dialogue between academia and civil society.

What is the value of work? Between platform economy, financial markets and social upheaval

Opening of the summer semester on 15 April 2026, 4 pm

While digitalisation is realigning entire sectors of the economy, job profiles are changing fundamentally - or disappearing completely. At the same time, financial markets and technological infrastructures are increasingly influencing how companies are managed, how work is organised and how value creation is distributed.

Focussing on "What is the value of work? Between platform economy, financial markets and social upheaval", Prof. Dr Jana Costas and Kevin Kühnert will discuss how digitalisation and financial markets are changing work and why traditional notions of security and advancement are becoming fragile. This will be followed by the official opening of the Viadrina Coworking Space at 5.30 pm.

At the opening of the 2026 summer semester, our guests will discuss with the audience how the social value of work is shifting referring to the interplay of financial logic and technology, why traditional promises of advancement, security and recognition are losing their binding power and how work and the economy can be rethought. The event will be simultaneously interpreted into English.
