With the Viadrina Debate, the European University Viadrina presents itself as a place for debating socially relevant topics of the future - both regionally and nationally. Current issues are discussed at the Viadrina Debate from a pan-European perspective. The series brings together experts, students and the interested public in a forum for critical discourse and promotes dialogue between academia and civil society.

Viadrina Debate summer semester 2026

What value does work hold in an age of the platform economy, financial markets and social change? This was the topic of discussion between former SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert (now Head of the Taxation, Distribution and Lobbying Division at finanzwende e.V.) and Viadrina economist Prof. Dr Jana Costas on 15 April 2026 at the Viadrina Debate to mark the start of the summer semester.

In conversation with the audience, they addressed questions such as how the world of work is changing, why traditional promises of career progression are becoming fragile – and who stands to benefit from this transformation.
