Viadrina Debate

Viadrina Debate

With the Viadrina Debate, the European University Viadrina presents itself as a place for debating socially relevant topics of the future - both regionally and nationally. Current issues are discussed at the Viadrina Debate from a pan-European perspective. The series brings together experts, students and the interested public in a forum for critical discourse and promotes dialogue between academia and civil society.

Can Society Grow Through Crisis? What Eastern Europe Teaches Us About Resilience – and Why Ukrainians Can’t Stand the Word Anymore

14 Oktober 2026, 4 p.m., Audimax

How do crises change societies? What role do digitalisation, democracy, urban development and civic engagement play in this? And what does ‘resilience’ actually mean when a country continues to function under the conditions of a devastating war? These questions, and what Germany and the EU can learn from Eastern Europe, will be discussed by journalist Vassili Golod and Viadrina sociologist Susann Worschech, together with the audience on 14 October 2026 at the Viadrina Debate to mark the start of the winter semester.

The event will be simultaneously interpreted into English and Ukrainian.
