Important terms explained: Glossary for Anti-Discrimination Work at Viadrina

Viadrina is a place where people with different cultural backgrounds, values, and ways of working come together to conduct research, work, and study. Respectful and fair interaction is the foundation of our daily cooperation and our goal in maintaining a consistently positive working environment. As an educational institution, Viadrina also bears a special responsibility and serves as a role model in this regard.

We should all try to treat others fairly. Nevertheless, experience shows that misconduct such as discrimination, (sexual) harassment, mobbing, or stalking can still occur.

To actively counter such behavior, it is important that we all reflect on our own attitudes and actions and seek information.

When it comes to discrimination, we can all continue to learn:

You have probably, at some point, discriminated against another person. And you have probably also experienced discrimination yourself, for example because of your age, appearance, name, origin, or dialect. It is equally likely that you have witnessed someone else being discriminated against.

Discrimination is everywhere, and it does not always happen intentionally. At this point, we would like to refer you to important terms  that help explain how discrimination works and why it harms and excludes people.

There you will also find suggestions for what you can do to stand up against discrimination—both for yourself and for others.

We are also happy to provide support and advice if you have questions or would like to discuss this topic.
