Funding & Costs
Erasmus+ KA131 (Europe)
During your stay abroad at a Viadrina partner university in another European country, you will receive an Erasmus+ mobility grant. It is not possible to apply directly to the EU for an Erasmus+ mobility grant. Financial support for Erasmus+ student placements is based on the varying costs of living in the destination countries (‘programme countries’).
Academic year 2026/27
The Erasmus+ mobility grant consists of:
(1) Funding rates per country group
(2) Social Top-Up, where applicable
(3) Travel allowance
(4) Additional funding for travel days, where applicable
The calculation is made on a day-by-day basis (30 days = 1 month). It is based on the data confirmed by your partner university in the Letter of Stay and the Grant Agreement.
Payment is usually made in two instalments:
- approx. 70% upon arrival and submission of the Letter of Stay – Arrival
- approx. 30% upon return and submission of all Erasmus+ documents
In the case of a two-semester mobility period (e.g. double degree), payment is made in three instalments. The first instalment therefore comprises approximately 30 per cent of the full mobility grant.
If you complete a language course at the partner university in advance, this may also be funded in accordance with the Erasmus+ funding rates set out below. This is subject to confirmation of the duration (Letter of Stay or certificate of attendance) and the course taking place no more than 1–2 months before the mobility period begins.

Green Travel (Sustainable Travel)
- ‘Green Travel’ is defined as using at least half (50% or more) low-emission modes of transport, e.g. train, bus, bicycle or carpooling. Cruises are only considered green if they are combined with sustainable modes of transport or if no more environmentally friendly alternatives are available. (Air travel is not considered a sustainable mode of transport, even if CO₂ emissions are offset).
- With Green Travel, you receive higher travel allowances and possibly also more additional travel days.
We would like to encourage you to choose sustainable travel options. Of course, journey times by train and bus are sometimes significantly longer than when travelling by air. On the other hand, you won’t need a luggage scale and you’ll have the opportunity to break your journey into stages, allowing you to get to know the places between our university and your host institution.

Exceptional costs for expensive journeys
- Exceptional travel costs may be funded if it can be demonstrated that the standard travel allowance covers less than 70 per cent of the actual costs.
- In this case, up to 80 per cent of the actual travel costs may be covered.
- If approved, the standard travel allowance does not apply.
The allowance is paid at the daily rate for your country group.
- Standard journeys: max. 2 additional travel days
- Green Travel: max. 6 additional travel days
You will receive this only for longer journeys (more than 10 hours each way for the outward and return journeys).
Erasmus+ KA171 (partner countries)
This offer is open only to students who have been awarded an exchange place at one of the Erasmus+ KA171 partner universities.
- Funding is available for stays abroad of up to 5 months for Bachelor’s and Master’s students as well as PhD candidates from all faculties.
- The grant amounts to 700 EUR per month. In addition, there is a flat-rate travel allowance of 275 EUR, 360 EUR or 820 EUR, depending on the distance.

Academic year | Direction of mobility | Funding rate
2024 / 2025 Viadrina → Partner country €700 per month
2024 / 2025 Partner country → Viadrina €900 per month
- The Erasmus+ mobility grant consists of:
- (1) Funding rates per country group
- (2) Where applicable, funding with a Social Top-Up
- (3) The flat-rate travel allowance
- (4) Additional travel funding, where applicable
- You will receive the mobility grant on a day-by-day basis for each semester abroad (one month corresponds to 30 days). The funding rates per country group are calculated based on the date confirmed by the partner university on the ‘Letter of Stay’ (Confirmation of Arrival and Departure) and the terms set out in the Grant Agreement.
- In addition, there are ‘Social Top-Ups’ for participants with fewer opportunities and for additional travel days. To receive the top-ups, you must complete declarations on your honour.
- You will receive your Erasmus+ mobility grant in several instalments. The first instalment, equivalent to the full amount of your grant, will be paid to you within approximately 4 weeks of submitting the confirmation of arrival in the Letter of Stay. You will receive the remaining instalments on a monthly basis.
- You can find an overview of the Erasmus+ mobility grant here.
The Erasmus+ programme promotes equality of opportunity and inclusion. For this reason, the programme provides additional funding instruments:
Participants with fewer opportunities (those eligible for the Social Top-Up) receive an additional: 250 EUR per month (see the PDF with the funding rates including the Social Top-Up above). These include:
- Students with a disability or chronic illness
with a GdB of 20% or above, a verified disability or a chronic illness (these may be physical or chronic mental health conditions), both of which entail additional financial needs whilst abroad. - Students with child(ren)
At least one child is taken along for the entire duration of the stay abroad. The top-up amount is independent of the number of children. - First-generation university students
Neither parent nor primary carer holds an academic qualification from a university or university of applied sciences (this also includes comparable qualifications from vocational academies and foreign qualifications not recognised in Germany, see the Hochschulkompass website and the website of the Accreditation Council Foundation).
Further information on inclusion and participation, as well as contact details, can be found here.
If at least 50 per cent of the journey is made using ‘green’ or low-emission modes of transport, the travel allowance may be increased. ‘Green Travel’ refers to journeys where environmentally friendly modes of transport are used for the majority of the route – for example, train, bus, bicycle or car-sharing.

BAföG for studying abroad
Financial support under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) is a form of state funding that is subject to certain eligibility criteria (e.g. nationality, age, aptitude, income). You can find the current regulations on the website for BAföG for students studying abroad.
Look for answers to the following questions:
- When am I entitled to BAföG for studying abroad?
- Which BAföG office is responsible for my case (the relevant office varies depending on the federal state)?
- What deadlines must I meet?
- How is my period abroad counted towards the total funding period?
- What additional allowances can I receive alongside my BAföG?
Note: Even if you are not entitled to domestic BAföG, this does not rule out entitlement to BAföG for studying abroad, as the basis for calculation is different in this case.
Education loan
Taking out an ‘education loan’ is another way to fund your studies abroad. Education loans are offered on relatively favourable terms to help finance educational projects. Further information on the German government’s education loan can be found on the website of the Federal Office of Administration.
Other scholarships
There are a wide variety of organisations, foundations and similar bodies that award scholarships to support stays abroad. Each of these organisations has its own application procedure and its own eligibility criteria. The main factors taken into account are academic qualifications and personal suitability. These must often be demonstrated by academic transcripts, references from university lecturers and a description of the study or research visit. Deadlines must also be met, some of which are well in advance of the planned period of study abroad.
Note: It is often not possible to receive dual funding! You are usually not permitted to receive funding for a stay abroad from more than one scholarship-awarding organisation at the same time. There are certain exceptions in the case of BAföG and EU grants. The Deutschlandstipendium can also be combined to a certain extent.
Examples of scholarship-awarding organisations and further sources of information:
- German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): The application deadlines for DAAD scholarships depend on the type of scholarship and the destination country. Please find out about DAAD scholarships well in advance, as the application deadlines are very early. Further information can be found on the DAAD’s scholarship pages.
- ‘Down Under’ study grant from the Ranke-Heinemann Institute’s Academic Foundation: A grant covering 10 per cent of tuition fees for Australian and New Zealand universities (only for independently organised stays abroad).
- Eidam & Partner: Eidam & Partner award scholarships to Master’s students for study abroad programmes, regardless of the destination country.
- European Scholarship Database: The Initiative for Transparent Student Funding (ItS) launched the European Scholarship Database with the European Funding Guide.
- Fulbright Commission: The Fulbright Commission awards scholarships for study periods in the USA. Nicole Klück is the contact person at Viadrina and is responsible for the application process. Please check the Fulbright Commission’s website regularly, as there are always different scholarships available with varying deadlines.
- GFPS e.V.: GFPS e.V. awards scholarships to German undergraduates and PhD students who are interested in spending a semester at a Polish or Czech university or taking a semester-long language course in Poland.
- Mystipendium: You will also find comprehensive information on scholarship opportunities on the mystipendium.de website.
- National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic: You can also find comprehensive information on scholarship opportunities on the scholarships.sk website.
- Foundations: On the website of the Federal Association of German Foundations, you will find information on funding available from various foundations.
- StudyPortals: On this website, you will find a scholarship database featuring various scholarship programmes worldwide.
- German National Academic Foundation: Offers various scholarship programmes, including “Metropolises in Eastern Europe" and the "China Scholarship Programme".
- Full scholarships from the Ranke-Heinemann Institute’s Academic Foundation: The funding covers tuition fees for one semester at Australian and New Zealand universities. Funding is available for Bachelor’s and Master’s students as well as PhD candidates. Applicants who are supervised by the Ranke-Heinemann Institute and enrolled at an Australian or New Zealand higher education institution are eligible for a travel allowance.
- ZEIT-Stiftung Bucerius “Arnold Heidsieck Fund”: Supports one- or two-semester study periods at US universities. The scholarships are aimed at BA students in the humanities whose studies focus on German culture, language, history, music or art.
Costs and tuition fees
Tuition fees
If you are studying abroad at one of Viadrina’s partner universities, you will not normally have to pay any tuition fees. However, there may sometimes be small administrative costs to pay at the partner university, e.g. for the issue of a student ID card or compulsory membership of student organisations, which entitles you to discounts.
Please note: If you organise your study abroad programme yourself, you will usually have to pay tuition fees. Detailed information on the amount of these fees can usually be found directly on the website of the foreign university to which you wish to apply.
Cost of living
Although the cost of living is not something that only arises when staying abroad, you should not underestimate the following expenses in particular whilst abroad:
- Any administrative fees and visas
- Travel to your place of study
- Additional costs for excess luggage
- Accommodation
- Gas, electricity, internet, telephone, etc.
- Food
- Clothing suitable for the weather
- Health and accident insurance
- Medicines
- Local transport costs
- Bank charges
- Leisure activities
This list is, of course, not exhaustive, but it gives you a rough idea of the possible additional costs. Make sure you find out in good time – i.e. before you apply to study abroad – about the expenses you can expect to incur. Do not forget that the cost of living in some countries (e.g. the United Kingdom or the USA, but also in Scandinavia) is higher than the comparable costs in Germany.
You can find information on the cost of living, for example:
- on the websites of partner universities
- at the respective embassies
- in the country information provided by the DAAD
- in the experience reports of former exchange students.
Note: If you are applying for or have been awarded a scholarship, please check the terms and conditions to see to what extent travel costs will be covered additionally or whether the scholarship can continue to be paid in its current form during your stay abroad.
