Erasmus+ Short-term mobility & Blended Short-Term Programme (BIP)

Short-term mobility programmes

In the new generation of the Erasmus+ programme (2021–2027), the opportunities for studying abroad have been significantly expanded once again.

If you are a student (BA / MA / PhD) at Viadrina, you have the following options:

  1. Traditional Erasmus+ study period abroad for a "long-term mobility" lasting between 2 and 12 months.
  2. Short-term mobility lasting 5–30 days (with a compulsory virtual phase); for example, taking part in a summer school abroad.
  3. Participation in a BIP (with a compulsory virtual phase).

The information on this page relates to study-related stays abroad in the form of short-term mobility, as listed under points two and three.

Further information on short-term mobility and the range of summer schools available in 33 European countries can be found on the ‘European Education Area’ website of the European Commission.

Further information on Erasmus+ long-term mobility programmes can be found here.

Information on funding for work placements under Erasmus+ is available from the Career Center.

Concept and Objectives

What are Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP)?

BIPs are short, face-to-face learning, teaching and training programmes for students (5–30 days) combined with a compulsory virtual phase (collaborative online learning exchange) of unspecified duration; the in-person component should, where possible, take place at a partner university abroad or, where subject-specific, at an institution affiliated with the university.

What is the aim of a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP)?

To organise short, intensive mobility phases and activities with international partner higher education institutions, utilising innovative learning and teaching methods, including online collaboration (Collaborative Online International Learning/COIL). The intensive programme should offer added value compared to existing courses or training programmes, for example by aiming to form transnational and transdisciplinary teams to facilitate joint work on global challenges (e.g. in connection with the UN’s SDGs) or by facilitating flexible mobility opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds and fields of study across all cycles of study.

What are (Blended) Short-Term Mobilities?

They are structured similarly to BIPs and are therefore also short in-person learning, teaching and training programmes for students (5–30 days) combined with a compulsory virtual phase (cooperative online learning exchange) of unspecified duration. The in-person activity should, where possible, take place at a partner university abroad or, where subject-specific, at an institution affiliated with the university; however, it does not have to be part of a BIP. This opportunity is also aimed at students from diverse backgrounds and fields of study for whom long-term mobility is difficult.

Prerequisites

Who is eligible for funding?

Under the Erasmus+ programme, students (BA/MA/PhD) at Viadrina are eligible for funding.

What is funded?

Funding is available for study placements at one of our partner universities, for which at least 3 ECTS credits are awarded.

Currently, at the European University Viadrina, funding is generally only available for stays within the Erasmus+ programme country are eligible for funding.

In some Erasmus+ partner countries, stays under the Erasmus+ KA171 scheme are possible.

Duration of funding

For short-term blended mobility, the funding period is a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 30 days.
The physical stay must be supplemented by a mandatory virtual component.

Application

Please send your application by email to short-term@europa-uni.de.

Applications for funding under the Erasmus+ Mobility Programme can only be submitted to Viadrina. It is not possible to apply directly to the European Commission or the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Application deadline

There is no application deadline; we allocate funding on an ongoing basis. Whether funding can be granted depends on the available budget and the number of applicants. If you are interested, please contact us directly, ideally at least three months in advance.

As soon as you have received our approval, you can submit the funding application documents.

Documents

Please upload your documents via our application portal; you will only receive the link to do so once you have contacted Sarah Krebs at short-term@europa-uni.de. Please have the following documents to hand to ensure your application via the portal is successful:

  • Certificate of enrolment
  • Transcript of marks from viaCampus
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Any language proficiency certificates
  • Travel grant application form

Please note! The travel application form helps us to calculate the funding available for your short-term mobility. You can find it here. It is also linked on the portal.

Once your application has been successfully processed in the MoveON database, you must also provide the following Erasmus+ documents:

  • Learning Agreement – you can find a guide to this here,
  • Grant Agreement and, where applicable, the declarations of honour regarding the social top-up and green travel days,
  • Letter of Confirmation,
  • EU Survey.

I will send you the relevant documents once you have been selected.

Financing

What financial support do participants receive?

For short-term in-person mobility placements as part of the Blended Mobility Programme (BIP), the Erasmus+ programme offers financial support calculated on the basis of a daily allowance and a travel allowance. These may vary depending on the duration of the mobility; once you have been selected, we will advise you on this immediately.

The daily allowance for all (Blended) short-term mobility placements is as follows:

Duration of mobility Funding Possible top-ups

Days 5–14: 79 EUR per day. For participants with fewer opportunities: a one-off payment of 100 EUR

Days 15–30: 56 EUR per day. For participants with fewer opportunities: a one-off payment of 150 EUR

Source: DAAD

The one-off travel allowance is based on distance and mode of travel. There are therefore standard journeys (by aeroplane, ship – not ‘green’) and green journeys (train, bus, carpooling, etc.), and the amounts are as follows:

Distance Standard journeys Green journeys

10 to 99 km 28 EUR 56 EUR

100 to 499 km 211 EUR 285 EUR

500 to 1,999 km 309 EUR 417 EUR

2,000 to 2,999 km 395 EUR 535 EUR

3,000 to 3,999 km 580 EUR 785 EUR

4,000 to 7,999 km 1,188 EUR 1,188 EUR

8,000 km or more 1,735 EUR 1,735 EUR

  • Additional travel funding:
  1. Additional travel days may be funded at the respective daily rate of €79.
  2. ‘Standard travel’ means that the majority of the journey (more than 50 per cent of the outward and return journeys) is undertaken, for example, by aeroplane or car (excluding carpooling).
  3. ‘Green travel’ means that low-emission modes of transport are used for the majority of the journey (more than 50 per cent of the outward and return journeys), e.g. train, carpooling, bus or bicycle. (Air travel is not considered a sustainable mode of transport, even if CO₂ emissions are offset).
  • Additional funding for students from disadvantaged backgrounds:

Participants with fewer opportunities (those eligible for the Social Top-Up) receive an additional: one-off payment of 100 EUR for stays of between 1 and 14 days, and 150 EUR for stays of between 15 and 30 days. This includes:

  1. Students with a disability or chronic illness: with a GdB of 20% or above, a proven disability or a chronic illness (these may be physical or chronic mental health conditions), both of which entail additional financial needs whilst abroad.
  2. Students with child(ren): At least one child is taken along for the entire duration of the stay abroad. The top-up amount is independent of the number of children.
  3. First-generation university students: Neither parent nor primary carer holds an academic degree from a university or university of applied sciences (this also includes comparable qualifications from vocational academies and foreign degrees not recognised in Germany, see the Hochschulkompass website and the Accreditation Council Foundation website).
