Viadrina is setting up a Remote Law Campus for law students at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy
In future, Ukrainian students will be able to study law at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) on the campus of the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). From September 2026, the ‘Remote Law Campus’ will offer up to 25 students a safe environment in which to commence their four-year law degree. During several in-person sessions each semester, lecturers from NaUKMA will then deliver seminars and lectures on the Viadrina campus. In addition, the Ukrainian students will take advantage of course programmes offered by Viadrina. The Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture is providing around 44,000 euros for the first pilot phase of the project.
“The Remote Law Campus is designed to enable young Ukrainians who are temporarily residing in Europe – and in Germany in particular – to undertake their Bachelor’s degree in Law at NaUKMA whilst simultaneously studying here with us at the European University Viadrina,” explains Stefan Henkel, Head of the International Office at Viadrina, describing who the programme is aimed at. Through the Remote Law Campus, Viadrina, in collaboration with NaUKMA, is facilitating the training of lawyers who are well-versed in both Ukrainian and European law and can thus make an important contribution to the reconstruction of Ukraine and its potential accession to the European Union. Furthermore, the project counteracts the feared ‘brain drain’ – that is, the loss of Ukrainian academic talent – by enabling students to maintain their connection to a Ukrainian university, says Stefan Henkel. He adds: “The Remote Law Campus forms a further building block in the structural deepening of Viadrina’s cooperation with Ukrainian universities.”
The European University Viadrina has a long-standing partnership with NaUKMA. The Ukrainian students on the Remote Law Campus also benefit from the existing structures for Ukrainian studies within the Competence Network for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies (KIU) and the German-Ukrainian University Network (DUHN). Furthermore, the entire infrastructure of Viadrina is available to students, including the libraries, study rooms, sports facilities, as well as student activities and campus services.
