Photo exhibition on destroyed cultural heritage in Ukraine
Churches, museums, theatres, monuments, libraries - hundreds of cultural heritage sites have been damaged by Russia's war against Ukraine over the past four years. The photo exhibition "War destroys monuments: consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine", which is currently on display in Viadrina's Main Building, gives an impression of the attacks on Ukraine's cultural heritage. Renata Hanynets organised the exhibition at Viadrina. The doctoral student in the Chair of Historic Preservation is offering a guided tour of the exhibition in English on Wednesday 18 March at 4.00 pm. Registration is not necessary.
"The loss of cultural heritage due to the war in Ukraine often remains in the shadows. Destroyed museums, burnt archives, damaged churches - all of this receives little media attention. But their destruction is not only a material loss, but also a symbolic one," says Renata Hanynets, explaining why she organised the exhibition at the Viadrina. War not only destroys buildings, it also destroys memory, historical continuity and cultural identity. "The idea of the exhibition arose from the need to show that behind every ruin there is a story - architectural, artistic, human, which is important to us," says Renata Hanynets.

The exhibition consists of 20 photos of damaged buildings from various cities in Ukraine. The motifs are a selection from the special category "War Destroys Monuments" of the international photo competition Wiki Loves Monuments.
