University Sports Club opens new sports facilities in August-Bebel-Straße
After around four years, the university sports club (USC) is returning on campus: the new premises in the university complex on August-Bebel-Straße were officially opened on 6 November 2025. On a total area of almost 1000 square metres, there are now several rooms for fitness, gymnastics, weight training and socialising. The spacious, bright area invites students, Viadrina employees and Frankfurt residents to participate in sporting activities.
USC chairman Torsten Bergk and Viadrina Chancellor Robert Nissen, who is a member of the USC board by virtue of his office, brought a relaxed mood to the opening of the new facilities. For the sports club, which also organises university sports, the opening of the new rooms marks an important turning point: only a short time after the closures during the coronavirus pandemic, the USC had to move from its premises on campus to an alternative location due to the renovation of the coworking space. What was originally planned four months turned into almost four years. Over time the club lost members - and most of the sports equipment had to be stored due to water damage on the construction site in the Auditorium Maximum.

However, the USC can look ahead now again. Thanks to the joint - and financial - efforts of the association, the Viadrina and private individuals on the association's board, not only students can now enjoy the newly renovated and expanded training area, but also the numerous non-student members of Frankfurt's largest sports club. "Sport connects people across Faculties, languages and nationalities", said Robert Nissen at the opening. For that reason the club was keen to set up a meeting room in the new premises for socialising after sport.
"An attractive university sports centre is one of the deciding factors for a university - we can now take an active role again", commented Torsten Bergk before inviting the curious guests into the new sports facilities.
