European University Viadrina is the first university in Berlin and Brandenburg to join the United Nations University Network

Frankfurt (Oder),

The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) is strengthening its international network. It is the first university in Berlin and Brandenburg to be accepted into the global network "United Nations Academic Impact" (UNAI).

Founded by the United Nations in 2010, the initiative brings together around 1,600 universities from over 150 countries worldwide. The aim of the network is to promote the values and goals of the United Nations through research and education. These include, in particular, the protection of human rights, free access to education and the promotion of sustainability and conflict resolution. To this end, the UNAI network offers students and researchers from member organisations a wide range of opportunities for exchange, further education and the transfer of scientific knowledge into political processes, as well as access to United Nations events.

"I am very pleased that the United Nations has accepted the Viadrina into the UNAI network. I am convinced that the international, pan-European profile of the European University, which is aimed at dialogue and understanding, fits perfectly with the goals of the network. We look forward to contributing our expertise as an interface between Western and Eastern Europe, as a renowned centre for international peace and conflict management and our focus on teaching and research on social challenges to the network and to learning from international exchange," said the President of the European University Viadrina, Prof Dr Eduard Mühle.

Back in December 2024, the European University Viadrina was the first university in Brandenburg to join two renowned global university alliances.

The International Association of Universities (IAU) accepted the Viadrina as the eleventh member from Germany and the first university from Brandenburg in December 2024. The global association of around 600 universities and academic institutions from 130 countries was founded in 1950 under the auspices of UNESCO.

Also in December 2024, the European University Viadrina joined the group of signatories of the "Magna Charta Universitatum Observatory of Fundamental University Values and Rights". The declaration, first signed by 388 universities in 1988, is a commitment to free science and research. Almost 1,000 universities are currently signatories, including around 40 universities from Germany. The Viadrina is the first university from Brandenburg to sign the Magna Charta.
