EU in a Changing World

The seminar will entail visits to various EU institutions but also Brussels based think thanks and VUB. Students will meet Members of the European Parliament, EU officials, and consult think tanks, as well as academic and media experts, but also representatives of civil society about the challenges ahead of the EU and the policy orientation of the Commission. Critical questions will be raised in the context of geopolitical changes dominating our time. In article 2 of the Treaty of the European Union, the EU claims to be founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. During the seminar, we will target the question to which extent the EU institutions are able to live up to these values in the context of various internal and external crises. By doing so, the seminar establishes as close connection to the to the Jean Monnet Policy Network ValEUs (https://valeus.eu/). Participants of the field trip are expected to produce student policy papers on the realization of European values in a political and/or policy area of their choice by January 30, 2027. (tbc) The optional programs on Thursday (November 19) should allow for focused explorations of Belgian history and society from different angles (in the context of different historic periods).
