Scientific Staff Member of the Master's programme in European StudiesDr Amelie Kutter is a permanent research assistant in the Master's programme in European Studies at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). She researches and teaches European politics and European societies. She analyses power relations generated by European integration, combining political sociology, political science, political economy and discourse research. Recent research projects include the teaching research project 'Transformations towards Sustainability', the blog project 'Crisis and Discourse' (CriDis) and the Marie Curie project 'Reconfiguration of centre and periphery in the European Union after crisis'.
Amelie Kutter has published on crises and politicisation (e.g. Construction of the Eurozone crisis: re- and depoliticising European economic integration, Journal of European Integration, 2020,42(5)), on political legitimation in post-national contexts (e.g. Legitimation in the European Union: a discourse- and field-theoretical view, Palgrave 2020), as well as discursive policy studies and digital methods of text analysis (e.g. Researching institutions after the discursive turn, The Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research Design, 2021; Corpus analysis: an explorative technique, Handbook of Language and Politics, 2018).
She holds a PhD in Political Science from the European University Viadrina and the University of Lancaster, an MA in Political Science from the Free University of Berlin and a BA in Politics, Law and Slavic Philologies from the TU Dresden and the HU Berlin. Work and research stations were at the TU Dresden, FU Berlin, Lancaster University, Science Po Paris.
Amelie Kutter is currently spokesperson for the thematic group Discourse Research of the German Political Science Association (DVPW) and, together with Dr habil. Estela Schindel the working group `Climate Crisis, Sustainability, Anthropocene' at the Viadrina Institute for European Studies. At the Viadrina Center B/Orders in Motion, she is involved in activities researching social and symbolic border demarcation. She is part of the Jean Monnet Policy Network 'ValEUs' and coordinates the workshop and publication 'Critical Perspectives on European Values' together with Dr Kolja Lindner.
As part of the MA European Studies programme, she has developed a number of innovative teaching formats, including the 'Challenge-Based-Learning-Seminar' Transformations on Sustainability, in which students develop solution scenarios with practitioners in the field, and the simulation game 'Who decides in the EU', which simulates the ordinary legislative procedure on current EU migration policy projects.
Dr Amelie Kutter will not be offering consultation hours in the winter semester 2025/26.
