New seminar series emphasises Eastern European perspectives in business and economics
The Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at Viadrina hosted the first Brown Bag Seminar "Research with a Focus on Central and Eastern Europe" on 29 April 2026. The event was the first in a series of research seminars designed to strengthen academic exchange between Viadrina and universities from Central and Eastern Europe on a permanent basis. It was initiated by Dr Miriam Maske (Deputy Professor of Controlling) and Prof Dr Drahomir Klimsa (Junior Professor of Taxation and Accounting).
At the invitation of Miriam Maske, two visiting academics from Poland kicked off the new series: Prof Dr Monika Łada from the SGH Warsaw School of Economics and Prof Dr Alina Kozarkiewicz from the AGH University of Krakow. In three further lectures, current research findings with a connection to Poland from the fields of accounting, tax law and controlling were presented and discussed.

Monika Łada and Alina Kozarkiewicz spoke about the political dimension of corporate reporting: their study, published in the journal Accounting in Europe, analyses how right-wing populist tendencies are reflected in the annual reports of listed, state-controlled companies in Poland. In the second lecture, Drahomir Klimsa presented a working paper on the effects of legal uncertainty in tax law on the choice of company legal form in Poland. Finally, Michael Kołodziej, academic assistant at the Professorship of Management Accounting, presented his research on the question of how management control systems can reduce differences in cultural barriers to whistleblowing - also with evidence from Poland.
The Brown Bag Seminar is designed as an open and regular format: Researchers from Central and Eastern Europe will be invited to Viadrina for each edition to present and discuss current research projects. Colleagues from Berlin and Brandenburg universities as well as doctoral students are cordially invited to participate in the series and contribute their own projects.
