International focus: studying abroad and optional double degree

Semester Abroad

  • During your stay abroad, you must earn at least 12 credits.
  • As a general rule, the coursework must not be completed in your native language.
  • Recognition is subject to the provisions set out in §12 of the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO).
  • For the recognition of foreign studies and examinations at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, the Division of International Affairs is your central point of contact.
  • It is not possible to have academic achievements and examination results recognised directly by the professors.

Double degree

Applying for and planning a double degree requires more effort than undertaking a semester abroad. Please note that there may be differences in academic calendars.

Exemption from undertaking a period of study abroad

In justified cases, the examination board may exempt you from studying abroad. To do so, you must submit an informal, reasoned application in writing, as an original document, to the relevant examination board.

Instead, you must earn at least 42 credits in modules taught in a language other than German. In addition to courses taught in a language other than German, credits for the Master’s thesis and final colloquium will also be counted towards the 42 credits required under Section 6 of the programme-specific regulations, provided that the thesis was successfully completed and defended in a language other than German.

Master’s thesis and final seminar

  • To be eligible to undertake a Master’s thesis, you must have completed coursework and examinations totalling at least 72 credits.
  • Individual professorships may impose further requirements for the approval of a supervision arrangement. Please check the websites of the individual professorships.
  • Supervision must be arranged centrally and within the specified deadline submitted in a timely manner.

Calculation of the final mark

  • The final mark is calculated as the average of the modules required for the degree, the final thesis and the final colloquium, with the average being weighted according to credits.
  • Modules that have been assessed as ‘pass’ are not taken into account when calculating the final mark.
  • The final mark is calculated to the first decimal place. Any further decimal places are disregarded without rounding.
