The process of European integration has been particularly visible at the borders of EU member states. Political stabilization and the development of the Schengen Area have reduced the traditional separating function of borders, creating new opportunities for cross-border cooperation and regional development. At the same time, recent crises - including the COVID-19 pandemic, migration pressures, and Russia’s war against Ukraine - have led to renewed re-bordering tendencies, strengthening the role of borders as instruments of security and control. This seminar examines the dynamics of de-bordering and re-bordering in Europe from the collapse of communism to the contemporary era of polycrisis. Combining micro- and macro-level perspectives, it explores cross-border cooperation among local and regional actors, as well as developments at the EU’s external borders. Particular attention is devoted to border twin towns, Euroregions, and the symbolic and practical dimensions of European integration, security, and border governance.
