Being exposed to perfect people and perfect images on social media, it is common for people to start to question themselves. They also feel bothered and held back by self-doubt.

In this workshop participants take a close look at their strengths and weaknesses and learn how to use them efficiently.

We also tackle topics like self-confidence, imposter syndrome and perfectionism. What causes these? What can be done about them? And how can one generally lead a happier and more self-loving way of life?

Coaching Sessions

Each participant will have an individual coaching with Sandra Abed.
They can bring up their individual topic or question.
During the coaching session suitable solutions and tools can be found and things will become clearer. So hopefully each student will be prepared to take the next step in front of them.

With a population of more than 80 million people, Germany is the largest European economy and one of the largest economies in the world in real terms. Germany is also one of the world’s top three exporters. But is there a certain kind of behavior at work that can be called “typically German”? What would internationals need to know, observe and even adjust to when living, studying and working in Germany?

Internationals may often find themselves struggling to find their feet in the German culture. Customs such as the mysterious lunchtime greeting “Mahlzeit!” as well as the avoidance of uncertainty and the focus on the task (rather than on relationships) can leave foreigners confused and lead into intercultural misunderstandings.

This workshop explores historical and cultural events and phenomena that have a high impact on life and work in Germany. As this workshop will be very interactive, you should expect to take part in discussions and exercises. Don't be afraid of the language barrier, having to cope with this is a key skill of intercultural communication!

Culture as an orientation system
Introduction to German Business Etiquette
German Cultural Standards
Dealing with Stereotypes and intercultural misunderstandings

This course is about getting to know the professional desktop publishing programm InDesign. After a short introduction into desktop publishing, we start with optimizing the user interface and getting to know the tools and aids that InDesign offers us. Then we turn to the principle of desktop publishing: creating page layouts by the use of 3 kinds of different frames. We import text form Microsoft Word and Excel and we format these in an appropriate manner by means of preconfigured paragraph and character formats. Apart from learning to handle InDesign from scratch, we analyse professionally layouted schoolbook documents. After that we export InDesign documents to PDF and have a word about accessibility. After two intense days of learning you will be able to create your own documents and explore further possibilities of InDesign on your own. Do attend this course!

About the trainer

My name is Louis Sterck. I am a Dutchman and I live in Berlin for 25 years. As a graduated physicist I have taught physics first, before I unexpectedly shifted to teaching software, 25 years ago. I am still doing so and I still like it. My main field these days is cross-media production and accessibility, using information in many different ways. Excel and VBA are a very practical data source for that. Excel is a program well worth learning for many reasons, like I will show you. As for my teaching, I like to make the most of my courses. You will get structured information and practical  exercises and you will have fun along the way. Learning works much better if you enjoy the ride.

Seminar prerequisites

To make the most out of this online training, you should have a computer with sound and a microphone, or a headset. A camera is useful but not explicitly necessary. A second monitor, a second computer or a tablet is of great use. On one screen you follow, hear and see the presentation on the instructor's screen, on another screen you do your own exercises in Excel. One big monitor of at least 22 inches, 60 cm, is possible too, if not that comfortable.

In this compact two-day Excel-seminar, we pick out two topics: Practical use of common and some uncommon Excel functions on the one side, and Excel programming with macros and VBA on the other.

After the first part of the seminar, you will be able to use many functions in Excel the right and efficient way. We will discuss and use functions by themselves and complexly nested. After this, you will handle functions easily and know how to find help to functions you haven't used yet. Apart from this there will be loads of tips and tricks. Working with Excel makes fun, you'll see!

After the function part of half a day comes automation of things in Excel with macros and VBA (visual basic for applications). Real programming you won't learn in only one and a half day, but with a well-structured beginning you will have a good head start and you will be able to continue learning VBA on your own, if you find it useful. We will start with recording and executing macros, then optimize them by hand in the Excel visual basic editor. After that, we write VBA ourselves, using all the help functions that the editor is offering us. It will be little theory and a lot of small, useful exercises. Come and see what Excel programming can do for you. Are you on?

Contents

  • Fast and efficient use of simple and more complex functions in Excel
  • How to nest Excel functions the right way
  • Record, use, administrate and change Excel macros
  • Understanding and optimizing the user interface of the Excel VBA editor
  • Write VBA by hand: Procedures, variables, data types, control structures etc.
  • Practical exercises
  • Tips and tricks

Kommunikation ist das halbe Leben. Mindestens.

This interactive online workshop focuses on the distinctive aspects of applying for jobs in English, a scenario you may encounter with any firm (in Germany and worldwide) which operates internationally. It provides training in navigating selected stages of that process, including building your curriculum vitae and cover letter and presenting yourself convincingly in the interview. We'll examine sample CVs and cover letters, exploring them for guidelines on how to optimize your own credentials for potential employers. In breakout rooms, you'll work with fellow participants in pairs or small groups to do a short exercise and two interview role-plays with feedback from your trainer. The virtual format also provides the perfect platform for gaining experience with interviewing online. The workshop's overall goal is to enable you to create effective application materials on your own and to increase your confidence when interviewing in English.

You'll receive a .pdf file with example materials as well as other helpful information related to the job-application process. The workshop is held in English by a native speaker, and participation requires a B1 level of English or higher.

Contents

  • Formatting English-language job-application materials
  • Principles for creating a clear and compelling CV
  • Insights into choosing and structuring the cover letter's content effectively
  • Selected differences between British and American-English cover letters
  • Presenting oneself confidently and convincingly in English-language interviews (online and face-to-face), including practice via two mock interviews

There are a number of helpful and science-backed relaxation techniques out there. They have proven useful for many people and certainly have their place in self-care for mental health. However, in some situations all our efforts at relaxation fail. In some cases, they might even have a paradoxical effect: The more we try to relax and the more we invest into this goal, the tenser and more stressed we become. This is where mindfulness comes in. Mindfulness invites us to take a breath, to acknowledge our experience exactly as it presents itself and to gradually widen our capacity to be with whatever arises.

This workshop aims to introduce participants to mindfulness and its practical application in everyday life. There will also be opportunities for participants to connect and share their experiences. Therefore, a working camera that is switched on throughout the workshop is a prerequisite for participation. Please note that this workshop is no substitute for individual counselling or psychotherapy and not meant to treat mental illness of any kind.

In our fast-paced world with its many personal and professional challenges, most of us have forgotten the art of relaxation. When we do have free time, which is rare enough, we often spend it on social media, where more impressions and ideas come at us. The natural rhythms of activation and rest that evolution has endowed us with can no longer flow, instead we get locked into constant threat-detection mode, often with negative consequences to our physical and mental health.

This workshop aims to introduce participants to different scientifically proven relaxation techniques. Participants will learn about our biological stress system and get a chance to try out different relaxation methods in order to find one that best suits their personal preferences. There will also be opportunities for participants to connect and share their experiences. Therefore, a working camera that is switched on throughout the workshop is a prerequisite for participation. Stress is part of life and we all experience it. This in itself is not problematic, our brains and bodies are well equipped to deal with stressful events. In order to do that they need downtime as well, stress and relaxation need to be in balance. If that balance is disturbed and stress becomes chronic, our productivity and, more importantly, our health are impacted. We feel more and more on edge and less and less able to enjoy life in all its facets.

This workshop aims to help participate understand what stress is and where it comes from. Participants will be introduced to psychologically sound techniques to manage stress and find more balance in their lives. There will also be opportunities for participants to connect and share their experiences. Therefore, a working camera that is switched on throughout the workshop is a prerequisite for participation. Studying at a German university, internationals encounter various types of debates, discussions, presentations and defenses during seminars, workshops and conferences. Soon they will be expected to develop their opinions, express and defend them, too.

But… how? Should you state your ideas rather indirectly or directly? How would you organize our ideas and opinions in a discussion or structure your arguments when writing a paper?

There are different strategies to cause interest and convince your audience of your ideas when writing a paper or doing a presentation. This becomes especially important in exams.

This workshop helps you to get to know the different strategies and explore them theoretically and practically. And YES, we will also deal with the topic of stage fright

Communication plays an important role in interaction and relationship building when living, studying or working with others.

Being a newcomer to Germany, you will experience many situations in which you need to pay attention to the details of communication: when applying for an apartment or job, when making an appointment with the doctors or when negotiating the price for something that you buy.

How can we make sure that we have understood each other correctly? And how can we express ourselves and get the most important points across? What strategies and skills can we apply?

This workshop enhances your conversational skills and teaches you how to prepare for important and difficult communication situation.

Research has shown that intercultural misunderstandings and conflicts at German universities center around issues such as learning/teaching styles, the communication with professors/supervisors, cooperation in research groups and the communication with authorities and administration.

This workshop helps you to avoid intercultural misunderstandings and solve conflicts. Based on authentic intercultural case studies (Critical Incidents) from German universities we will develop and train various communication techniques and strategies for conflict resolution.
