05.10 Founding of the Association of Friends and Supporters of Frankfurt (Oder) University.
06.12. The foundation of  European University Viadrina is announced in a government statement by he German federal state of Brandenburg.

15.07. Official establishment of European University Viadrina by the federal state of Brandenburg.
06.09. Inauguration of the new university and constituence of the acting University Senate with its acting rector Professor Knut Ipsen, Ph. d.
1992  
19. 10. The first academic year at Viadrina begins.
1993  
22. 1. Viadrina is included in the addendum to Germany’s official catalogue of universities.
14. 10. Election of the University’s first rector, professor Hans N. Weiler, Ph. d. (Stanford/California) by the University Council.
27. 10. First meeting of the elected University Senate.
1995  
24. 4. The president of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Roman Herzog, visits the University.
22. 11. Viadrina and its Collegium Polonicum, a joint project with Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, are awarded the German-Polish Prize for 1995.
1996  
15. 10. The president of the Republic of Poland, Aleksander Kwasniewski, visits Viadrina, delivering the keynote address at the opening of the fifth academic year.
1997  
4. 12. The chancellor of Germany, Dr. Helmut Kohl, and the prime minister of Poland, Professor Jerzy Buzer, visit the university together.
1998  
10. 6. Inauguration of the Collegium Polonicum in Slubice, in the presence of the ministers of  education of the two countries.
1999  
29. 4. Laying of the cornerstone for a new university complex which  include cafeteria and lecture halls.
8. 7. Awarding of the first Viadrina Prize to Karl Dedecius.
11. 10. Handing over of the office of rector from Professor Hans N. Weiler, Ph. d, to his successor, Professor Gesine Schwan, Ph. D (Berlin/Germany), now president of Viadrina.

The German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and the Polish President visit the Viadrina. The German and Polish National Education Secretaries (Wolf-Michael Catenhausen and Tadeusz Szulc) sign in their presence a "joint declaration on the strengthening of the cooperation between students, scientists and reasearchers of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland".
