She ends up in Marktredwitz, Bavaria, where she gives birth to her daughter Annemarie and raises her alone because her father has remained in Poland due to political ambitions. The years pass and Susanne's hopes for a fairer world in the West are dashed. She cannot let go of her homeland and a family secret.
