Access at Viadrina Viadrina is a university which places great value on diversity and heterogeneity. Creating an inclusive system of education requires important conditions such as removing barriers of all kinds and the implementation of measures to ensure participation in university life. Therefore, our counselling is as far as possible accessible to take into account the needs of students with health impairments concerning access to facilities, types of communication and the day-to-day life of the university. |
It goes without saying that all potential students and existing students should be able to study in an accessible environment. There are many different types of barriers – they can include infrastructure barriers (e.g. buildings which are not accessible for wheelchairs), as well as others which relate to types of communication (e.g. language barriers or sensory impairments) and those associated with the day-to-day life of the university (e.g. limited time for studies or examinations).
‘Accessibility’ means comprehensive access and the unrestricted possibility to take advantage of all aspects of life. Every person should be able to make normal use all facilities without creating special entries or finding solutions which involve stigmatizing people with disabilities. The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) takes care to ensure that all of the study possibilities are as accessible as possible.
Some dormitories and all teaching facilities are accessible by wheelchair, some are step-free while others can be accessed by a ramp or an elevator.
The entries to the Auditorium Maximum (AM) and the Gräfin-Dönhoff Building (GD) are equipped with electronic opening buttons. In some buildings (the main building, language center) the assistance of staff or a helper is necessary (if necessary ring the bell or call the doorman or janitor).
All university buildings have accessible bathrooms. The Studentenwerk (Student Services) Frankfurt (Oder) offers accessible one-room apartments for rent.
There are several disabled parking spaces on and around the campus. To park here you need a blue EU parking permit. There are also numerous pay parking spaces which can be used free of charge by holders of the blue EU parking permit or an orange parking permit.
There are further parking spaces on the site around the seminar building in August-Bebel-Straße.

The university has two work stations for the blind and people with visual impairments. These are located in the library and the language center and each is equipped with a computer with speech capability, an extra-large screen, a printer and a screen reader.
The library work station for the blind and people with visual impairments is located on the top floor of the main building. You can obtain further information and the key in the lending and return section of the library. The language center (August-Bebel-Strasse) work station is located in the self-study center in room 016.
To be able to make full use of the associated technology, maintenance work is required, which is the aim at this present time (October 2019).
If required, students with health issues can use a dedicated laptop for examinations. This can be arranged in advance with the counselling team.
The larger seminar rooms and all lecture theaters are equipped with microphones. Furthermore, infra-red receivers which amplify the sound signal can be borrowed from the university. It is also possible to arrange a video broadcast. This has to be agreed in advance with the counseling team, the Department of Communication and Media Research and the lecturer involved. Video and audio broadcasts are possible in the rooms GD HS1, GD HS6, the Audimax and the Logensaal. Contact the Counselling Team to take advantage of this service.
Lecturers provide their lecture and seminar materials either online using the teaching platform Moodle or they send them directly to the student by e-mail or they leave a hard copy in the “Kopierfritze” copy shop.
Audio recordings can be made of lectures/seminars if the lecturer gives their permission.
