Frankfurt (Oder)

The European University Viadrina is located in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany, on the Polish border,  about 80 km from Berlin.

Please, do not mix up Frankfurt (Oder) and Frankfurt am Main!

These are two different cities!

Conference building

The official ewca conference program will be held in the building "Gräfin-Dönhoff-Gebäude" (GD) located: Europaplatz 1, 15230 Frankfurt (Oder), Germany. You find it marked with the letter "D" on this map.
How to get to the conference building From the train station, you can either walk (10-15 min., scroll down to get maps) or take the "Tram No.3" with direction "Europa-Universität". The last stop is directly in front of the building where the conference takes place. For time tables you can follow this link to the public transport homepage. The station at the train station is called "Frankfurt (Oder) Bahnhof".

There are also always taxis in front of the train station.

How to get to the writing center (peer tutor day and open house) From the conference building or city center take the "Tram No. 2" with direction "Messegelände".

Get out of the tram at the stop “Witzlebenstraße”. To your right you will see a big yellow brig building. This is the university building “Seminargebäude August-Bebel-Straße”. Enter the building, turn left and and go up to the first floor. The writing center is on the left, room number 115.

How to get to Poland (hotels, student dorm, restaurants...) From the conference building you can walk easily to the bridge crossing the river Oder to Poland (15 min.). There is also a bus with the number 983 to Slubice. The student dorm is the final bus stop.

Train connection to Frankfurt (Oder)

You can use a convenient local train to come from Berlin. It's a one-hour-ride. Timetables are availabe from the website of the Deutsche Bahn. Usually, trains are going every 30 minutes from Berlin to Frankfurt (Oder) and are called "Regionalexpress" (RE1). Be aware that the trains can have different destinations, depending on the time. They either go directly to Frankfurt (Oder), or via Frankfurt (Oder) to Eisenhüttenstadt or Cottbus. RE 1 stopps in Berlin are e.g. at Zoologischer Garten, Friedrichstraße, Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof.

You should get a ticket before entering the train (either at a counter or at a ticket machine).

Please, makes sure to get off the train not at the train station "Frankfurt (Oder) - Rosengarten" but at the next stop "Frankfurt (Oder)".

From the train station, you can either walk (10-15 min.) or take the "Tram No.3". The last stop is directly in front of the building where the conference takes place.

There are several train connections from Poland, too.

Attention: different train connections between July 18th and 20th:

• The interruptions are from July 18th 9pm till July 21st 3 am. This means, everyone arriving before 18th 9pm or leaving later than 21st in the morning can catch the regular RE1. In Berlin, e.g. at the train stations Hauptbahnhof, Friedrichstraße, Alexanderplatz or Ostbahnhof.

• Otherwise, if you arrive at Tegel or Schönefeld Airport, please ask at the information desk how to get to Erkner. If they don’t know, they can inform you about the nearest information desk of the public transport companies – they have information desks in both airports. Ask the staff to print you a description how to get to Erkner by public transport.

• Buy your ticket to Frankfurt (Oder) at the airport, it is valid in the S-Bahn, Subway and every bus as well.

• In Erkner, change to the regional train RE1 with destination Frankfurt (Oder) or Eisenhüttenstadt.

Airports close to Frankfurt (Oder)

Berlin is the next big interchange where international flights arrive at. So far, Berlin has two airports (Tegel and Schönefeld). Most international flights arrive at Berlin-Tegel.

You have the following possibilities to get to Frankfurt (Oder):

Arrival via airport Berlin-Tegel

  • After the arrival at Berlin-Tegel you can either take a taxi (about 12 Euro) or the bus (X9) to reach the train station "Zoologischer Garten". Tickets are available at the ticket-booth or directly from the driver (ca. 2,50 Euro). From this train station you have direct connection to Frankfurt (Oder) with regional train RE 1 (see above).

 Arrival via airport Berlin-Schönefeld

  •  If you arrive at Berlin-Schönefeld you can either take the suburban line ("S-Bahn", nr.9) or the train "Regionalexpress" ("RE", Airport-Express) to the train station "Ostbahnhof".  From this train station you have direct connection to Frankfurt (Oder) with regional train RE 1 (see above).

Crossing the border to Poland

If you have a visa valid for Europe, there is no need for an extra permission to go to Poland from Germany and back. Poland belongs to the "Schengen Agreement."
