Integration via Competence

Project to promote intercultural competence in the border region

The Center for Intercultural Learning of the European University Viadrina together with its partners, the Collegium Polonicum and the foster association Schloss Trebnitz, conducted the network project 'Integration via Competence', which comprised various components. The project was dedicated to the development of new perspectives regarding intercultural competence in the border region and the multiplier effects.

As a result of the project, new networks have emerged and crucial partnerships have been established. For example, students of all 6 higher education institutions in the border region (Collegium Polonicum in Słubice, Uniwersytet Zielonogórski, Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa in Gorzów Wielkopolski, Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus and Fachschule Lausitz) were brought together.

The project consisted of various modules, all of which focused on the impartation and realization of intercultural competence and thus on the successful integration into every-day life in the border region.

1.   In the introductory phase of the project, intercultural training sessions at 5 universities in the border region were offered. Here the Center for Intercultural Learning of the European University Viadrina facilitated a transfer of knowledge for its partners from its successful intercultural competence program.

2.   In a second step, particularly interested students were able to take part in a certificate program on ' Intercultural Competence for the border region Germany - Poland' in September 2011.

3.   In the framework of a public symposium on 'Intercultural Competence in the border region' in October 2011, the debate of the topic was opened up to a broader circle of interested people. This gave the participants the chance to link up with other active persons in the border region and find new project partners.

4.   On a civic level, best-practice examples were investigated and subsequently doumented. In the context of the traveling exhibition „Bywa różnie – (Ścieżki) życia w regionie przygranicznym” / „It may be different – Life(‚s) (journeys) in the border region“ they were opened to the public in October 2011. The opening of the exhibition took place in the SMOK (Słubice), following the symposium.
