Mentoring is a proved instrument for individual career development. It promotes young scientists and helps them managing their own carrier plans. The mentoring and coaching programme for female postdoctoral researchers offers to you varying elements, which support your networking management, provide you with opportunities to develop your skills and to learn more about different career paths for highly skilled women. The mentoring und coaching programme for female postdoctoral researchers consists of the following elements:
- A mentoring relationship
- A framework programme
- Qualification offers
- Networking events
- Guidance and advising by the programme coordinator
The mentoring relationship, the qualifications offers (workshops and coachings) and the guidance of the coordinator can be offered in English. However, to draw your personal maximum benefit from all elements of the programme, you should understand spoken German language well, be able to understand the core issues in discussions and be able to actively participate in conversations.
Usually mentoring is a one-to-one relationship. As another possible form of mentoring, the group mentoring offers the opportunity for exchange of views and experience between one mentor and several mentees.
For the role of a mentor, we focus on winning professors and senior researchers from universities and non-university research institutions. In regard to language skills and international background, we take the wishes of the mentees in consideration and specifically search for English speaking mentors. As a mentee of the programme, you will be asked to contribute own ideas and proposals concerning possible mentors. The programme coordinator will guide the matching process by providing support in the search of a suitable individual and by submitting an official request to the preferred mentor.
The mentoring relationship will be initiated at the beginning of the programme and is required to last until the end of the programme in October 2018. The partners of the mentoring relationship come to an agreement about the mentoring terms, such as communication channels and frequency of meetings. The coordinator provides assistance in an advisory capacity.
The framework programme consists of a kick-off workshop, three individual consultations with the porgramme coordinator and a closing event.
During the kick-off workshop, the mentees get to know each other. As a mentee, you familiarize with the concept of mentoring in general and particular with our mentoring and coaching programme for female postdoctoral researchers. You define your own objectives and learn how to derive the maximum benefit from the programme.
The kick-off workshop takes place at May, 6th 2017.
First individual consultations will be held between May, 8th and 19th, 2017.
The closing event is planned for October, 18th 2018.
During the eighteen month of the programme, we offer workshops and individual coachings for you.
As a mentee, you can attend to up to six workshops. Some of them will be conducted in English language. They offer to you the opportunity to develop your skills in carrier management, network management and university policy. The contents of the first workshops correspond with usual standards of mentoring programmes in science. Planning further workshops, we take your wishes and need into consideration, in regard to contents and dates.
A second column of the qualification offers are individual coachings, which can be offered in English language. They are planned for January, May and September 2018.
Networking events give mentees and mentors the opportunity to discuss on carrier topics and to exchange experiences in an informal atmosphere.
The first networking event is planned for September, 15th 2017.
During the whole programme the coordinator supports the mentees and the mentors in confidence.
