Winter semester 2020/21

In the 2020/21 winter semester, the department Viadrina International Affairs is offering various workshops to support international students in their studies and to develop job-related soft skills, key competencies and qualifications.

Many women see themselves exposed to sexualized and / or racist attacks against women in everyday life. Regardless of whether intrusive looks, suggestive comments or jokes, showing obscene representations or even physical assaults lead to these border crossings - a feeling of helplessness often arises when crossing these own limits. Sexualized and / or racist attacks and border crossings happen on the street, in the family, but also in the university. The aim of this empowerment workshop is self-assertion. The better this succeeds, the less often physical self-defense is necessary.
Contents of the course:
  • Basic exercises for breath, voice, stance and balance
  • Movement and reaction exercises
  • Perception exercises
  • Simple and effective kicks, punches and rescue techniques
  • Body language exercises
Target group: International female students, female students with migrant and/or refugee background. (Please note that the workshop is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the project DAAD Integra. How is leadership understood in German companies? Which cultural “rights” but also what kind of attributions do women experience in management positions? How can I communicate well as a young woman in a management position? How can I assert myself as a woman with a different cultural background? The participants of the 2-part workshop deal with these questions. Participants get to know the different roles of a female manager and the basics of management processes in Germany.

This workshop also focuses on practical exercises and reflections on one's own understanding of leadership, because this workshop is intended to support women with an international background in preparing for a future leadership position.

Academic writing plays a central role in your studies. Academic writing is not only important for proof of performance or in your thesis, but also when developing and processing knowledge and developing new ideas! Studying, especially studying in a foreign country, can bring many outer and inner challenges: exam stress, pressure to perform, a new (language) environment, transitions, homesickness etc. Perhaps you are experiencing some of these difficulties and maybe you are looking for practical ways to offset them and regain your physical and mental balance.

Mindfulness meditation helps us turn towards all experiences, even difficult ones, with patience, equanimity and kindness – instead of habitually isolating, criticising or overextending ourselves or distracting ourselves in unhealthy ways. The practice of mindfulness and self-compassion invites us to take good care of our body and be attentive to its needs. Adopting an interested, open and non-judgmental attitude towards everything that arises is all that is required. We can train ourselves to pause and turn with kindness towards everything that moves us, internally and externally. This is an act of active self-care.

This workshop is a cooperation between the Department Viadrina International Affairs and the Psychological Counselling Centre at European University Viadrina. In this workshop, you will learn to access your innate capacity for kindness and awareness through different mindfulness practices. This will enable you to support yourself in helpful and constructive ways, even in challenging times.
Target group: The workshop is aimed mainly at international students of the Viadrina. However, the workshop is also open to other Viadrina students depending on the availability of places. Please note that in this case the final approval of your participation will take place short before the workshop takes place. (Please note that the workshop is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the project DAAD Integra. Discussions about racism and discrimination existed before the death of George Floyd and the increased media presence of protests and movements like #BlackLivesMatter. Nevertheless, these discourses currently occupy a lot of space in public sphere and offer an opportunity for reflection. The Department of International Affairs would like to contribute to this reflection and create opportunities to deal with racism and the various forms of discrimination.

Are you sometimes unsure how you can and should talk about racism? Would you like to learn more about different perspectives - your own and those of other participants? These workshops aim to question the historical and current questions about racism as a discrimination ideology. The discussion should also focus on the "discussability" of racism and discrimination. Discourses that are closely interwoven with violence, nations and cultures in media reporting should be disentangled in this way.
Target group: This workshop is aimed at Viadrina students, especially international students.
Trainer: Ms. Joana Rendelmann

This workshop is particularly suitable for international students who want to familiarize themselves with the German job market and is organized in cooperation with the Career Center of the European University Viadrina. For many foreigners, Germany has good working conditions. Local employees enjoy some of the highest salaries in the world, generous benefits and state-mandated job protection. However, being a foreign student in Germany it might be a hard work to find a good job. Even though there are many agencies out there that can provide help, it can still be a difficult process.

This seminar will help you to find answers to following questions:

  • Finding a job: Where to look for a job in Germany
  • Job applications: How to apply for a job in Germany
  • Student jobs: How to finance your studies in Germany
  • Working in Germany: Management culture, salaries and labor regulations
Target group: The workshop is aimed mainly at international students of the Viadrina. However, the workshop is also open to other Viadrina students depending on the availability of places. Please note that in this case the final approval of your participation will take place short before the workshop takes place.
