Summer semester 2021

In the summer semester of 2021, the Department Viadrina International Affairs is offering various workshops to support international students in their studies and to offer the opportunity to build up job related competencies and key qualifications.

What defines the German labor market - and what perhaps distinguishes it from other work cultures? What are the customs in the German business world? Participants in this workshop familiarize themselves with intercultural learning experiences by learning to better interpret their own behavior and assessments and thus prevent intercultural misunderstandings. In addition, participants get to know the German business world and the application process in Germany better.
Please note that the workshop consists of two dates.
Target group: This workshop is primarily aimed at international students and students with a migrant and/or refugee background. However, in case there are places availabe, also other Viadrina students are invited to take part. (Please note that the workshop is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the project DAAD Integra. In this context places in the workshop are partly provided for international Viadrina students from Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Eritrea and Nigeria.)

Many women see themselves exposed to sexualized and / or racist attacks against women in everyday life. Regardless of whether intrusive looks, suggestive comments or jokes, showing obscene representations or even physical assaults lead to these border crossings - a feeling of helplessness often arises. Sexualized and / or racist attacks and border crossings happen on the street, in the family, but also in the university. The aim of this empowerment workshop is self-assertion. The better this succeeds, the less often physical self-defense is necessary.
In addition, participants learn the basic elements of Wendo. Wendo is directed against various attacks against women and supports them in standing up for themselves.
Contents of the course:
  • Basic exercises for breath, voice, stance and balance
  • Movement and reaction exercises
  • Perception exercises
  • Simple and effective kicks, punches and rescue techniques
  • Body language exercises
Target group: International female students, female students with migrant and/or refugee background.

Communication is half the battle. At least. As Paul Watzlawick noted in his famous quote, "You can't not communicate." So communication and rhetoric are exceedingly significant elements in our lives. Knowing this fact is certainly one thing, but transferring it into everyday or even business practice is another.
Especially for most women it often fails in the implementation. This is exactly where the workshop steps in. Equipped with a solid basis of basic knowledge as well as with different communicative strategies, participants receive valuable tools to go through life easier, more successful and more fulfilled. Don't worry! It's not that hard and it's even fun! The workshop teaches the following skills:
  • Different concepts of conversation and communication dynamics
  • Practical exercises with physical, creative and meditative elements
  • Different presentation techniques
  • Use of body language and the very specific unique type of woman
  • Development of an individual strategy for self-presentation
The goal of the workshop is that participating female students become aware of their special qualities as women and, equipped with a kind of "roadmap", develop more self-confidence in presentations of all kinds in the long term. No matter if it is about studies, life or profession. The good thing is: everything that is needed for this is already laid out in us and is just waiting to be activated.

Prerequisites for participation:
  • Basic interest in communication mechanisms
  • Willingness to get to know yourself from another side

Target group: The workshop is aimed at international female students as well as female students with migration and/or refugee background of the Viadrina. If necessary and depending on available places, other female students and doctoral candidates of the Viadrina can also participate in the workshop. Please note, however, that the final admission for this will be made only shortly before the beginning of the workshop. (Please note that the workshop is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the DAAD Integra project. In this context, part of the places are reserved for international students from Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Eritrea and Nigeria).

How do I organize my (digital) everyday study life? How do I manage to concentrate and be effective during the work phases? How many breaks do I need and how can I recover during them? And what circles of self-sabotage and procrastination do I need to break or prevent?
We develop individual answers to these questions in joint discussions. In smaller exercises, individual tools and techniques will be learned and applied.

This 1-day workshop imparts knowledge and skills for self-organization and motivation, especially in online teaching. Since the training is designed to be practical and interactive, your active participation in discussions, reflections and exercises is desired
Target group: The workshop is aimed at international students of the Viadrina as well as students with migration and/or refugee background. If needed and if capacities are available, other Viadrina students and PhD students are welcome to participate in the workshop. Now or later? Stay abroad? Scholarship application? Relocation? And if so, shared apartment or dorm? Where and how do I want to work in the long term? And what does that mean for my next steps in my studies, the topic of my bachelor's/master's degree, and whether a doctorate makes sense?

What do we need to make proper decisions? Sometimes we lack important information or experience and cannot assess the long-term consequences of our decision. Or do we lack working methods, i.e. ways to make decisions?

In this 2-day workshop we will look at why decision-making can be difficult, what types of decisions there are and learn tools and methods to make good decisions. This will then be tried and practiced individually and in group exercises. Participants are invited to consider in advance of the workshop if they need or want to make an important decision for which they would like support.

Small talk is the art of casual chit-chat, striking up a conversation with anyone and building a personal network. Which topics are suitable for small talk? What really matters verbally and non-verbally? How do I fit into a group and skillfully keep a conversation going? Are there signals that even frequent talkers understand immediately?
Learn how to make people want to get close to you and chat with you in the future. Discover how to present yourself best and most effectively, what potential lies dormant in you and how to score points with personality and charisma.
Experience that it's not so much what you say, but how you say it that matters.

Here everything revolves around communication and small talk. If you want to feel more confident and be heard in professional and private small talk situations, this is the right course for you. It is recommended for anyone who wants to build relationships with others and improve their communication skills. You will discover the fascinating potential of small talk and reflect on your own communication skills.

The goal of the seminar is to improve your communicative skills for your professional and private life in a simple and sustainable way. To this end, you will gain important background knowledge so that you can later decide with confidence what to do or not to do in which situation. Participants will feel more confident and enjoy small talk and conversation. You will receive individual tips and suggestions for your own personal appearance.

This compact Excel workshop focuses on Excel functions and Excel programming with macros and VBA (= Visual Basic for Applications). The aim of the workshop is to be able to use the most frequently used Excel functions that are relevant to the subject of study effortlessly and in a targeted manner - individually as well as in complex nested functions. This will enable a better understanding and targeted use of other Excel functions in the future. The basis for this is created by a self-created Excel spreadsheet. With the help of professional tips & tricks, participants of the workshop will quickly discover that Excel can be fun and that functions and formulas that initially seem complicated and complex will quickly become routine.

The second part of the workshop aims at understanding how to automate certain processes in Excel and how to apply them in practice. Participants of the workshop will learn how to record macros and how to extend them with self-written VBA codes in order to expand the possibilities in Excel.

Theory will be an essential part in this workshop, but mainly it consists of many small practical exercises. After the training the participants will be able to use Excel better and more purposefully and to estimate when own programming makes sense. Now it's just a matter of daring and implementing your own ideas!

Technical requirements for participation in the workshop:

Microphone and loudspeaker/headset
Camera desirable
2 screens or a screen of at least 28 inches (laptop/computer + tablet from 10 inches are also allowed)

If you are in balance with yourself and your body, conflicts don't throw you off track so easily. But how can you find this balance and, above all, maintain it for a longer period of time? In this workshop, students will learn mindful exercises to gain stability and centering and thus find their own center. These exercises for body and mind on the mat can later be transferred to one's own everyday life as well as to study and work. Participants also learn how to deal with conflicts in an appropriate way. With the help of a physical balance, one's own emotional balance can also be stabilized. Through the abstraction of conflicts it is possible to gain distance and this in turn enables a change of perspective. On the basis of this it is possible to get an overview of different situations more easily.

To participate in this workshop, one does not need any previous experience. It is helpful if a yoga, fitness or camping mat is available. Participants are welcome to wear sports clothes or comfortable clothes that are easy to move in.

How can one go through life and act more self-determined and autonomous? In this workshop, strategies and measures are taught that support the participants in their empowerment. Suggestions are offered for the personal path to step into one's own light. A special focus will be on mindfulness of the inner self, e.g. recognizing and acknowledging one's own strength, which is not dependent on external factors.
By trying out different exercises you will learn what helps to find your own and individual strength. Above all, special strengthening and invigorating asanas are used. Through the interplay of tension and relaxation, the exercises offer practitioners a lot of space for self-reflection, development potential and empowerment.

Time management helps to deal with time more efficiently and can thus be understood as self-management at the same time. Those who know their motives for action and focus on personal goals organize their mental and material resources more purposefully and are thus more balanced. If there is a lack of goals, planning and priorities, the feeling of self-efficacy dwindles.

In the sense of a fulfilled handling of one's own time, participants will acquire the following in this interactive seminar:
  • learn to deal more effectively and sparingly with their own time resources,
  • develop strategies for goal-focused task planning and prioritization,
  • gain more confidence in dealing with disruptive factors and time guzzlers,
  • learn more about personal motives for action and stressors,
  • understand why people put off certain tasks and how to tackle them.
The workshop includes the following main topics:
  • The personal handling of time
  • Setting goals and sustainable focus
  • Setting the right priorities
  • Organizing tasks based on task planning
  • Dealing with disruptive factors, delegation and "procrastination
  • Dealing with stress and inner drivers

Studying - especially studying in another country - involves numerous external and internal challenges: learning stress, pressure to perform and meet expectations, a new (language) environment, upheaval, homesickness, etc. Perhaps you are going through such or similar experiences and wish for practical ways to create a balance and regain your mental and physical balance.

Mindfulness meditation supports you in facing even unpleasant experiences with patience, serenity and kindness instead of isolating yourself as usual, criticizing and devaluing or distracting yourself with unhealthy habits.

Mindfulness and self-compassion invite you to take good care of your body and listen attentively to your very own needs. All it takes is an interested, open and non-judgmental attitude toward what you encounter. This pausing in the midst of everything that moves you internally and externally can be practiced and is a great support for all demands, in study and in private.

In this workshop you will discover your capacity for kindness and awareness through various mindfulness exercises, with which you can be a good friend even in difficult times.

The workshop does not require any special knowledge.

If you would like to participate and are currently suffering from acute severe psychological stress, please discuss your participation with the course leader in advance. In this case, please contact Marianne Tatschner (tatschner@europa-uni.de) to arrange a preliminary meeting.

Hardly a day goes by where we don't communicate with others, whether in our private lives or in the context of our studies or careers. In times of pandemic, our communication may be changing, but not the need to get in touch with each other. The way we make this contact is more important today than ever before: successful communication influences not only our (academic) success but also our overall quality of life. In order build genuine connections, it takes more than the application of "communication rules." The more we can approach our own thinking and feelings with interest, friendliness and openness, the more likely we are to experience connectedness with others. If we have then developed the willingness and ability to listen attentively and non-judgmentally, communication can succeed. Practicing mindfulness means cultivating these favorable conditions for communication.

This workshop teaches the basics of mindfulness and focuses on the practical implementation in communication situations. Initial experience with mindfulness, e.g. from the workshop "Serenity and presence in everyday study: less stress through mindfulness" (May 28, 2021), is desirable but not a condition for participation.

The workshop does not require any special knowledge.
