Viadrina Intensive Track for Refugees

The European University Viadrina, located in Frankfurt (Oder) on the border between Germany and Poland, invites prospective refugee students to study economics (bachelor courses International Business Studies, or Law and Economics | Economics and Law from winter semester 2019/20. The Viadrina Intensive Track enables a max. of 10 refugees interested in studying without the normal entry qualifications to study economics at Viadrina after taking part in the preparatory Viadrina Intensive Track. If the participants successfully complete a 12-month preparatory course which concludes in October 2019, they can begin their studies at Viadrina. During the preparatory course, the participants receive additional support from the Department Viadrina International Affairs who also assist in integration in the German university context.

The Viadrina Intensive Track enables refugees without formal university entry qualifications in Germany to take part in language, subject-based and methodological preparatory courses. After completing successfully the preparatory course, they will begin to study Business Administration and Economics (Bachelor courses International Business Studies or Law and Economics | Economics and Law) at the European University Viadrina.

Duration of the preparatory program: 12 month

Period of the preparatory program: October 2019 - September 2020

After you have been accepted in the program, you will attend a preparatory course from October 2019 with the following content:

  • German Course B2 + C1
  • Preparatory course for the German Exam to Study in Germany
  • Preparatory course for the TestAS
  • Preparatory course for Business Studies, Economics and Mathematics
  • English language course (if necessary)
  • Further subject-based, methodological and inter-cultural preparatory activities
  • Seminars and workshops to acquire key skills
  • Activities which support your integration in the German university context

The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) emphasizes especially a very good support system. This enables the participants of the Viadrina Intensive Track to receive specifically support before and during the participation in the preparatory program in order to integrate quickly at the university as well as in the city of Frankfurt (Oder).

Besides receiving support for integration in everyday life at a university, participants will be intensively supported by student assistants and peer tutors during the preparatory course as well as during their first year of study. Additionally the study preparatory program allows participants to feel at home through cultural events, excursions etc.

The costs of participating in the program amount to EUR 6,000. The costs for refugees are covered by the program DAAD Integra which is financed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This includes the following services:

  • Language and subject courses
  • Tutorials and workshops
  • Preparatory course for the German Exam to Study in Germany
  • Teaching and lesson materials
  • All examination costs (not including costs for repeating examinations)
  • Semester fees
  • Cultural events
  • Buddy program
  • Costs for support and supervision

There may be further costs for living expenses, accommodation and semester ticket for Berlin/Brandenburg which are not covered by the DAAD.

Application conditions

In order to take part in the Viadrina Intensive Track, you need to fulfil the following conditions:

  • A school-leaving certificate from your home country (if available)
  • German language skills, at least at B1 level (e.g. completed integration course)
  • Interest in economics and mathematics

Application process

You apply by using our Online-Portal you can find here.

Please follow the instructions. Firstly, you have to register in the portal. When you have registered, you receive an e-mail with an activation link. Click on the link and enter your password. Now you can apply online.

Complete the online application form in the portal and upload the following application documents:

  • Letter of motivation
  • Up to date proof of at least B1 German language skills (max. 6 months old)
  • High school diploma from your country of origin or Interim Certificate (if available)
  • Resume
  • Copy of residence status (e.g. indulgence or residence permit)
  • Recent passport photo

After you have completed and sent the online form and uploaded the necessary documents you receive your application PDF. You need to print out this document, sign it, scan it and send it by 7 August 2019 (23:59 CET) at the latest in PDF format to

Following a successful pre-selection process, we will conduct a short placement test and a get to meet you chat. This will take place in August 2019. If you are considered after the get to meet you chat, you will be approved to take part in the Viadrina Intensive Track for Refugees.
