This session offers an overview of the German academic system with an emphasis on its structural particularities in comparison with the Anglo-American system of higher education. The presentation will include an introduction to the central institutional stakeholders and their positions within the framework of science and politics. A special focus will be placed on early-career researchers and the specificities of career paths within the German academic system, taking into account recent changes, such as the amendment of the “Law on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in the Science and Research Sector” and the funding of 1000 tenure track professorships by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
