Are you interested in intercultural communication on university campus? Can you imagine acting as a facilitator for intercultural learning yourself? In this seminar students will look into basic theories and concepts of intercultural communication and competence. We will use and examine intercultural methods and activities to reflect on which skills are needed in order to become a culture-competent person. Participants will expand their own learning skills and constantly reflect their (intercultural) learning. The overall goal of the seminar will be to develop a theoretical input concerning relevant intercultural aspects in a university setting. This should be done in small intercultural groups and by using the methods of research oriented learning. By offering this seminar in English language we would like to invite and encourage international students at Viadrina to join us, share their experiences and enrichour learning. At the same time we would like to offer German students the opportunity to train their English language skills in an authentic learning setting. Besides, this seminar is part of the training to become an intercultural peer tutor, who will then support international students in learning at a German university or prepare German students in learning in a multicultural society. It is an equivalent to “Module 2: Theory Intercultural Communication“. The contents and methods can be further discussed during the Module 3 seminar (planned in German language), where participants will learn how to design and organize an intercultural training.
You will receive Credit Points in most of all programs in the category of soft skills - in German: "Praxisrelevante Fähigkeiten" or "Schlüsselqualifikationen". Please check on your own how many ECTS you will get with your program coordinator.
Literature: will be announced during the course
Participation requirement: Willingness to reflect on your own intercultural experiences. Please note: Participation- especially in the first session (as well as all the other six sessions) - is an essential requirement for the course. Since we will use the e-learning-platform “mahara” intensively, it is mandatory for all interested students who don't (or havn't) participate(d) in the seminar „Wissen schaffen im Team“ (yet) to join in an additional Mahara-training session in preparation of the seminar. The participants who took part in the seminar “Wissen schaffen im Team” receive separate training in this seminar.
References: The seminar will take place weekly from October 14, 2019, until December 9, 2019. Additional participation in the block seminar "Wissen schaffen im Team" is recommended.
Certificate of achievement: regular attendance and active participation, preparing and reflecting texts, designing an individual E-Portfolio using „mahara“, autonomous group work during the semester, among other (smaller) assignments developing a theoretical input on a related topic within a team, regular peer-feedback.
