Academic Smalltalk and Networking

Primary Target Groups: VIP-Fellows; Postdocs; Doctoral Researchers
Date: Wednesday, December 4 and Thursday, December 5, 2019 | 9 am - 5 pm (sharp) | Room AM 02
Course Teacher: Marietta Gädeke

Course Description:

To establish a career in research, professional networking is indispensable. Yet many highly qualified academics feel out of their comfort zone at conferences when it comes to conversations between panels or during social events. This is an additional challenge for non-native speakers at conferences held in English.

This workshop provides you with the tools for strategic networking and successful academic small talk. Participants analyze their professional network, define goals and evaluate their strategies. They reflect on their own conversational behavior at conferences and develop techniques for successful conversations in an environment of experts, such as a well-performed elevator pitch.

As academia is a field often subtly defined by status, participants will also learn about typical patterns of high-status communication, how to react to them, and how to be recognized as an expert in their own right.
