The study

The study plan for the study of law including the integrated bachelor's degree offers you two options for taking the first law examination (state examination). You take the SPB examination either before or after the compulsory state examination.

The basic studies last 3 semesters and are concluded with an intermediate examination in the form of final examinations at the end of each semester. This is followed by the main study period and the university focus area training with a further 5 - 7 semesters. During the main studies you will also acquire interesting soft skills in the form of key and additional qualifications. The university focus area training serves to complement and deepen the compulsory subjects related to it as well as to teach interdisciplinary and international references of law. It is completed in the 6th and 7th semesters.

Depending on your personal study planning, the main study period and the examination phase may partially overlap. For optimal preparation for the first law exam, we offer our free university revision course (Unirep). On the one hand, it repeats and deepens almost the entire compulsory subject matter. On the other hand, it offers you the opportunity to prepare comprehensively and intensively with the help of the revision courses, the exam course and mock exam or even the simulation of an oral exam. In addition, you can expect a comprehensive e-learning offer. The Media Law and Tax Law majors, which are completed with a certificate, complete our range of courses. For special achievements in European law, you can earn the "European Law" certificate.

Career prospects

After the first law examination and a two-year legal clerkship, you can take the second state law examination. Afterwards, a wide range of employment opportunities is open to you as a fully qualified lawyer.
The second state law examination is a prerequisite for the classic legal professions such as judge, public prosecutor, lawyer and notary or for a job as a lawyer in banks, insurance companies, legal or personnel departments of commercial enterprises or in the public sector.

The course problematizes Europe and the modernity emanating from Europe as formations that have emerged since the early modern period not only from commonalities, but equally from diversity. In many respects, this diversity acted as an enrichment, but it also led to conflicts: to political, economic, social and religious disputes and struggles over interpretation. The violent resolution of such conflicts is a specific feature of European history, not least in the process of colonial expansion. On the other hand, exchange with other world regions and cultural diversity within the continent have also produced particularly dense material and immaterial interconnections and transfers.

The course analyzes Europe and the modernity emanating from Europe, which since the early modern period have emerged from both commonalities and diversity. Diversity acted as an enrichment, but also led to conflicts: political, economic, social and religious disputes. Their often violent resolution is a specific feature of European history, from the process of colonial expansion to today's conflicts. At the same time, the exchange with other world regions and the cultural diversity within the continent have also produced particularly dense, material and immaterial interconnections. Without them, one cannot understand the political and economic upheavals that began around 1800 and the supremacy of Europe that lasted well into the 20th century. Against this background, the course also offers approaches to understanding the catastrophes of the 20th century and current political, cultural and economic crises.

Career prospects

The degree program is problem- and research-oriented. It strengthens key competencies and imparts interdisciplinary relevant knowledge that opens up career paths in a wide variety of directions. At the same time, it imparts practical knowledge in project seminars, usually in cooperation with non-university institutions such as archives, memorial sites, museums, international NGOs or exhibition makers. Many of these projects are dedicated to the historical landscape in Frankfurt (Oder) and its German-Polish surroundings, as well as in nearby Berlin. Especially historical testimonies of the recent past are available and to be discovered there in great density. Thus, the study program opens up relevant career perspectives, for example:

  • in museums, archives, libraries,
  • in historical research
  • in adult education and political education
  • in the foreign service
  • in companies and local authorities
  • in associations, foundations and political parties
  • and in the media in general

The MASS programme is based on an interdisciplinary understanding of Social and Cultural Sciences. It offers excellent networking opportunities with the other Master's programmes of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences (Cultural History, Aesthetics and Literature, Linguistics) of the Viadrina, so that various complementary emphases are possible.

'Socioculture' engages the MASS programme on both empirical and theoretical levels. Empirically, the focus is on the analysis of migration processes in global society, on the analysis of contemporary urban cultures and their transformation, on the structure of cultural, aesthetic, media and self-oriented practices, on the analysis of cultures of gender and sexuality, and on the topics of politics, religion and culture. The programme thus aims at elementary socio-cultural processes of change in late modern society on a global, national and local level in their interconnectedness. Theoretically, different social, cultural and societal theories are used in MASS.
