Visa

Viadrina students who have been accepted by the Department of International Affairs for participation in a study abroad program should begin completing the steps necessary for obtaining a visa as early as possible.

EU-residents do not need to obtain a visa when studying in another EU-country, but formalities for establishing residency often exist. Please be aware that completing the requirements for establishing residency in another EU-country can be expensive. As a rule, information about these formalities can be obtained from the partner university or the respective consular agency. General questions about the necessary procedures can also be answered by the team in the Department of International Affairs.

Non-EU residents studying at the Viadrina should be aware that a visa, in most cases, can only be applied for in your home country. In addition, the application formalities can be time consuming. Please inquire about these formalities where necessary and also in the Department of International Affairs of the Viadrina.

For study abroad programs in Non-EU countries, both EU and Non-EU residents require visas. Please inquire at the appropriate embassy about the necessary forms and procedures. Bulletins explaining visa formalities do exist for a few selected countries. These bulletins are available at the Department of International Affairs.

First steps in applying for a visa:

  1. You obtain an Acceptance Letter into the study abroad program from the Department of International Affairs at the European University Viadrina .
  2. Inquire at the Department of International Affairs about the general steps necessary for application to the partner university and for a visa; request the appropriate visa bulletins.
  3. Contact the appropriate embassy (via telephone or internet) to inform yourself about the necessity of obtaining a visa and, if so, which formalities need to be fulfilled.
  4. If you require a visa, the partner university will issue you a Letter of Acceptance through its Department of International Affairs, once your application is completed and accepted by the partner university.
  5. Apply for your visa using this Letter of Acceptance at the appropriate consular agency.
