Prof. Dr. Karl Schlögel

Professor of Eastern European History, Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Germany

Focus points of Schlögel‘s research and publications are Russian history in the 19th and 20th century, especially Russian Modernism between 1860 and 1930, the history of Stalinism, and urban development and culture in Eastern and Middle Eastern Europe. Connected to that is his research on violent population and border deferrals in the 20th century. Over time he has placed special emphasis on theoretical questions of historiography like the importance of the spatial dimension and the problem of appropriate narratives. He currently pursues a larger project on the Wolga as a Russian cultural space.
