Karl Kurbel authored several books such as “The Making of Information Systems – Software Engineering and Management in a Globalized World” (Springer 2008). His research and teaching include technology-related globalization topics. Taking into account that organizations have been increasingly running their business processes across borders and continents, he investigated typical procurement processes in the 1990s already in a project on “Global Sourcing” funded by DFG. The globalization of information technology (as pointed out by Thomas Friedman in his book “The World is Flat”) stimulated his research in “Global IT” and also a cooperation project with leading IT firms in India. Within this cooperation, German students are sent to India to do an internship with one of these global players (www.vibe-internships.com). Karl Kurbel initiated and heads a cross-border cross-continent English language masters's program (www.vg-u.de). This program is completely Internet based and has been running for 10 years. Today, students in 20 across the world are enrolled in the program. The research around the development of this innovative program was funded by BMBF within the “New Media in Higher Education” initiative, leading to a large number of publications on e-learning across long distances and technological barriers.
