At the beginning of winter term 2010/11 the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (EUV) established the interdisciplinary doctoral programme "Dynamic Multimodal Communication". The programme serves as a pilot scheme for a larger tri-national graduate school on DMC which is currently under preparation.
Dynamic multimodal communication (dmc) supports a new interdisciplinary perspective by including a cognitive linguistic view on analyses of speech and gestures, and a media studies (film studies) take on analyzing and theorizing moving images. DMC regards the intertwining of audio and visual modalities in terms of temporally organized (i.e. dynamic) processes that orchestrate meaning and emotion. It addresses dynamic forms and structures of interwoven modalities in different applied contexts, ranging from face-to-face communication and feature films, to leadership communication and processes of sense-making in business and management administration, to conflict resolution in legal discourses. The doctoral programme therefore combines expertise from the disciplines of linguistics and media studies with the specific scholarly knowledge of different discourse contexts which are researched in political science, economics (MBA) and legal studies.
The research projects of the first scholarship holders deal with the conceptualization and expression of emotions, the multimodality of e-campaigning and election campaigns and the formation and representation of corporate feeling.
